RESEARCH OUT LOUD: MET FELLOWS PRESENT
Golden and Godly on the Medieval Altar
Cristina Aldrich and Joseph Salvatore Ackley
FRIDAY, 12 MAY 2023 3:30–4:30 P.M.
The Met Cloisters
Join our current fellows in the galleries for in-person talks, readings, musical performances, and other activations of The Met galleries.
How was the Christian God pictured and made present—sometimes in the flesh—on the medieval altar? Focusing on a thirteenth-century sculpture of the Virgin and Child and a variety of Eucharistic liturgical vessels, this gallery talk will explore how altar equipment in precious metal and painted wood worked together to stage, unveil, and generate the divine.
